What sets Belair Leadership apart from the competition?

Why the Name Belair Leadership?

Belair Leadership is named after one of my early passions. The 1957 Chevy Belair Sport Coupe I bought when I was 14 years old. It took me almost 4 years to restore it with the help of my dad, a lot of books (pre-internet days), and a lot of lessons learned. I still own the car 32 years later and drive it as often as I can. It has an original 283 PowerPack engine, including a Carter carburetor and oil bath air cleaner. I have made several upgrades to make it drive better, like power disk brakes, power steering and air conditioning.

When designing the car, Chevrolet was not setting out to make a cultural icon. They just wanted to make a high-quality car that people enjoyed and wanted to use. They did want to make it better than any previous car and that drove the innovation of the first fuel injected engine and the milestone of 1HP per cubic Inch of displacement (283hp in a 283in3 engine). Constant improvement and a priority on the stakeholders led to a fantastic result.

Leadership is similar in that good leaders usually don’t set their objective to being a good leader. Effective leaders want to have a successful organization and want to help the people in the organization succeed. It is by doing all the small things that leaders become effective. Just like the 57 Chevy Belair is recognized for all the things done right, leaders become great when they learn to do their job right. Leadership is a learned skill and Belair Leadership strives to help people learn those skills.

Meet Ken Smith

Belair Leadership was founded with the vision to improve the lives of 1 million people. To do this, I want to impact the lives of 10,000 leaders who will improve the lives of 100 people each through more effective leadership. By helping leaders unlock their full potential, I create a cascading effect of improved lives.

My leadership journey has taken me from team captain in high school sports, through the Army and the oil and gas industry, to the 3 years I have dedicated to helping leaders grow. Helping others become effective leaders is my passion. I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from The United States Military Academy (West Point) and an MA in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University. I learn the basis of problem solving and the research behind effective leadership. Time in the Army as a Platoon Leader, Company Commander and Battalion Operations Officer put those lessons in context. 9 years as an engineering manager in the oil and gas industry taught me how leadership effectiveness looks and feels in the business world. My time with Academy Leadership taught me how to develop those skills in others.

Now I live my passion for helping other people every day. I also enjoy fixing things that break, home projects, traveling and time with my wife and young adult children. Watching them face the challenges of the world is the best coaching experience available.
